Understanding the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist

At Hersch Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on being the best pediatric dentist in Newport Beach. Many parents who bring their children to our office most likely went to a family dentist when they were young. So, why is it important to take your children to a pediatric dentist? And what exactly is the difference between the two?

Let’s talk training

Pediatric dentistry is a specialty in dental school that requires additional training. These programs for pediatric dentists typically take 2 to 3 years to complete (in addition to the four years of study to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree). This specialty training focuses on treating infants, children, and teens. This intensive residency training includes treatment of children under sedation and anesthesia, and management of growth and development issues related to the mouth, head, and face. But most importantly, pediatric dentists are trained to manage both the preventative and invasive treatment of a child in the least traumatic and friendly way. They are also the most highly trained dentists in preventative measures for infants, starting with the eruption of the first teeth. Basically, pediatric dentists are the best-trained doctors to help prevent oral disease and cavities in children.

What exactly do pediatric dentists do?

Well, unlike family doctors, pediatric dentists only treat children. They develop a relationship with the child throughout their oral development, from infancy and eruption of their baby teeth to teenhood and the developing mouth. Pediatric practices, like ours, focus on the unique needs of children, which includes making your child comfortable and relaxed. Everything in our office is geared towards our young patients and is designed to make your child comfortable during their exam. Our practice’s philosophy involves a low-pressure, fun-loving atmosphere where children can learn to be comfortable and understanding about dentistry. We want to mix both ‘cool’ and ‘fun’ into every child’s experience with us.
