dental sealants and cavities

Dec 12, 2017

At Hersch Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, your child’s dental health is our number one concern. That’s why we’re always researching the latest trends and techniques in preventive dentistry so that we can provide state-of-the-art treatments for your child when visiting his or her Newport Beach children’s dentist. However, sometimes the most effective treatments are also the most traditional and time-tested ones! If you’re looking to lessen your child’s chances of developing cavities, one of the first suggestions we have is to come in and visit your Newport Beach pediatric dentist and orthodontist and ask us about our dental sealants.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are plastic resins that are bonded onto the chewing surfaces of the molars in order to help prevent tooth decay. Sealants will smooth out the surfaces of these teeth and make them much easier to brush. These sealants will typically provide protection for the teeth for approximately five years.

H2: Why Dental Sealants Are Beneficial

This reason why this is such a beneficial and recommended treatment for children is because the chewing surfaces of the molars are actually incredibly cavity-prone. These chewing surfaces feature grooves with tiny crevices where food particles are very likely to get trapped in. Even through regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing, food particles can occasionally be difficult to remove. When food’s stuck in these grooves and pressed against the tooth enamel for long periods of time, they can lead to tooth decay.

Applying a Dental Sealant

Having a sealant applied is a simple procedure that can be finished in just one visit to your Newport Beach pediatric dentist and orthodontist. It follows these steps:

First, your Newport Beach children’s dentist will thoroughly clean, dry, and prepare the molars.

Next, the sealant will be painted onto the molars. In some cases, the sealants will be bright pink so that the kids dentist can be completely sure that all of the tooth’s grooves are covered. After it dries, it’ll blend back into the natural color of the teeth.

After all of the desired teeth are coated, the sealant will either be left to self-harden on its own or your kids dentist will use a blue spectrum natural light that will then harden the sealant.
