Tips to Have Good Dental Hygiene
At Hersch Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we’re proud to offer a comprehensive selection of effective services to give your child a healthier smile, from dental treatments to Invisalign in Newport Beach. However, that’s just one part of the equation; for a child to truly have a healthy smile, he or she needs to keep up with good dental hygiene on a daily basis. Now, we know how difficult it can be to convince a child to do just about anything, let alone take care of his or her teeth properly. As your Newport Beach orthodontist and pediatric dentist, we want to try to help set your child on the path toward a lifetime of great dental hygiene. To do this, we recommend heeding these pieces of useful advice.
Lead by Example
The first thing you need to know is that children don’t develop healthy oral hygiene habits on their own – they require someone to teach them. This is where you come in. Your child will take cues from you; if you do a great job with your oral hygiene, your child will likely follow after you. Try to make brushing and flossing a family activity so that your child will see what you’re doing and understand how to properly care for his or her teeth.
Limit Harmful Drinks
One of the things that can cause the most harm to a child’s teeth is actually sugary drinks. While you may be familiar with how harmful soda can be for a person’s teeth, you may not realize that fruit juices and sports drinks can be bad as well. All these drinks contain sugar that can eat away at a child’s tooth enamel if he or she drinks them too often. You won’t have to completely eliminate these drinks from your child’s diet, but try to make sure that your child is drinking something healthy and sugar-free (such as water or milk) as much as possible.
Don’t Skip Dental Appointments
We hope this one is obvious! Starting at about the age of one, you should begin taking your child to his or her children’s dentist in Newport Beach. Your pediatric dentist won’t just check for cavities and other dental problems; in fact, one of the most important things that your dentist will be able to do is help ensure that your child is maintaining good dental hygiene on a daily basis. A pediatric dentist can both review your child’s current dental hygiene routine and offer suggestions to make it more effective.
